Endo Capsule Frequently Asked Questions

 
How does Endo Capsule work?

Endo Capsule -- a state-of-the-art capsule endoscopy system -- contains a high-powered light source and miniature camera. The capsule travels through the small intestine via normal muscle contractions, taking thousands of pictures that are transmitted to a recorder worn around the waist.

What do I need to do to get ready for the procedure?

Do not eat or drink for eight hours before your Endo Capsule procedure. Your doctor may also prescrbe a laxative or other agent to cleanse yoru digestive tract. Wear comfortable clothing that will allow easy access to your recorder and antenna leads.

What should I expect as part of Endo Capsule procedure?

1. When you arrive, small antenna leads will be placed on your chest and abdomen. These leads are connect to a lightweight recorder that you wear around your waist.
2. You will swallow the capsule with water. Your doctor will use a real-time viewer to make sure the capsule is properly activated.
3. You can now leave your doctor's office and resume daily activities. The capsule will take pictures of your digestive tract. It will be moved along by your normal muscle contractions.
4. Two hours after you swallow the capsule, you may drink clear liquids or water. Four hours after swalilng the capsule, you may have a light snack.
5. Approimately eight hours after the procedure, you will return to your doctor's office, and the pictures in the recorder unit will be downloaded to a computer for observation.
6. The capsule will be excreted with your bowel movement. You should feel no pain or discomfort. It is not designed to be reused.

Is there anything special I should do during the procedure?
With the exception of vigorous physical activity that may result in your leads or recorder being pulled loose, you can participate in all your normal daily activities during the Endo Capsule procedure. While the capsule is in your body, you should not have an MRI exam or be near an MRI machine.

Is the Endo Capsule procedure right for everyone?
Anyone with a pacemaker, implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), or any other implanted electronic device; swallowing discorder; obstruction in the digestive tract; or pregnancy should not have an Endo Capsule procedure. Please talk with your doctor to find out if Endo Capsule is right for you.

Is the Endo Capsule procedure safe?
The Endo Capsule procedure is a safe and painless means of observing the small intestine. Although rare, complications may include failure to exctrete the capsule. If you experience any discomfort during or alter your procedureee, please call your doctor immediately.
